With regard to the beggars, I saw one lady several times during our stay, always late at night, sleeping with a baby at the Jl Legian end of Poppies 1. I always gave her something, but she really got me wondering about her circumstances. My first reaction was "I'm sure she has a boss, the child probably isn't hers" but now I'm wondering if that really is the case. There's a whole other world out there that I couldn't possibly understand.

Having spent a bit of time travelling through India and Nepal in the past, my sensibilities have become a little dulled with regard to beggars I'm afraid. In my [limited] experience, the people who don't ask are often the ones who need the money more. I have seen all sorts of scams, some quite creative, but it still saddens me that travel has hardened me a little. I suppose that is the price I have paid.
Thanks for the kind comments.
