From a post that I put up a while ago it seems that it is the luck of draw as to being charged excess baggage or not - irrespective of which airline you fly.
I have bought those stripey bags (affectionately known as Fijian Samsonite) and intend using these doubled in place of a suitcase that weighs 4.5kg come June. I'll stengthen them with those rainbow stiped luggage straps (you can buy 6 of these on a card for next to nothing at those discount stores). I have bought white cable ties will spray paint the ends and take a roll of packing tape that I will smother the bags with. Gonna look kinda strange but who cares - that will 4.5kg MORE shopping for me ......... yaaaaaaaay! We will take one suitcase with us for anything fragile but seeing how a lot of what we are bringing back will be made of fabric this is an ideal solution for us. And if you have a digital camera you can take photos of what your luggage looks like if there is any evidence of tampering. Might be worth giving it a thought for at least part of your luggage next time.
