Plane is the quickest and most convenient way to get to Lombok, and at Rp237,000 or less it is cheap (less than AUD 70 return).
I don't think Lombok has really changed at all in the last 3 years, so you should find it pretty much the same as last time.
Umm also I don't think Lion Air is flying to Lombok anymore, but there is another alternative to Merpati which is GT Air, and their tickets start at Rp199,000 one way (although not all seats are sold at that price).
The domestic terminal is undergoing some renovations currently, so the offices are being moved around a bit, but just ask someone where the office is and they will be more than happy to show you.
Also, another nice place to stay is Santai Beach Cottages in Mangset, about 5kms north of Senggigi. No pool, traditional style bungalows right on the beach, lovely garden. Very relaxed place and friendly staff. I prefer Mangsit beach to Senggigi, but that is a personal preference.
There are also some inexpensive places to stay on the other side of the island in Kuta Lombok.
