I personally prefer to travel their by plane - it's fast and you are there inside 25 minutes. I buy tickets at the domestic terminal at Ngurah Rai from Lion or Merpati Airlines. The accommodation choices are wide. Have a look at lombok-network.com
I always stay at Mascot Cottage - on the beach, no pool, quiet and cheap and very central. It's quiet in LOmbok, not so many tourists - a marvellous place to visit with fantastic local people.
