Im very suprised about the "free" seating between Sydney and Melbourne. Surely you were given boarding passes in Sydney and you would have been allocated these seats for the entire flight regardless of if it went via Melbourne.
Im also very suprised about not being told it we rerouting. Surely they knew this when you checked in!
I have flown AP a number of times from Perth and have nothing but praise for their service and staff.
