I'm sorry, but travelling OS without insurance is just silly. Remember Murphy's Law.
Travel insurance is helpful for lost luggage etc but let's face it, you want it in a crisis. Unfortunately, I've been there and done that. When the chips are down, and you're a long way from home, you would be amazed at what the insurer will do to help. My husband was constantly on the phone to our insurer from San Francisco back to Oz. Their response was simply amazing, but then so was the hospital in the US. The insurers help line was like having a friend who knew all the answers on the spot.
If you are a parent, I think it would be irresponsible to go without it. And also ... how wants to get sued for an event overseas and end up losing the house ?
Sorry, when you think about the downside ... you must have travel insurance, at least when going overseas.
