We hire a car each trip and especially when we are going somewhere to stay for a few days, allows you to really explore. One trip we hired a car for five days and did the whole island including staying a night at Amed. Its great driving yourself. Costs about 170,000rp a day with insaurance for a Kajang, which is a fairly good sized car, and then petrol is really cheap. Once you are out of the madness of Kuta the roads are a lot quieter.
