You are actually allowed to do and wear what you want anywhere in the world. You simply put on the g-string with denim skirt covering most of it and walk down the main street of Kabul or Islamabad and go about your business.

The problem arises when other people begin to judge what you wear. You have no control over that. And in places like those named above, you almost certainly would not get back to your hotel room unscathed. Whether it is right or wrong by your own standards is absolutely irrelevant. The others think it is inappropriate, so you will be spat on, stoned, raped or killed. Or all of those.

Still, you can protest and say that there is nothing wrong with it and you're not hurting anyone, but that's moot when you're dead.

Clearly, Bali isn't that extreme. But Indonesia is a very conservative country and thumbing your nose at that is done at your own risk.
