We generally give a good tip upon arrival and upon departure.
We also tip (small amounts) regularly at the restaurant or swimming-pool, bar, etc... if service is good. Also the persons cleaning the rooms whenever we see them or have items collected or given back for laundry for instance.
All tips should be put in a common "purse" for the staff, even for those we never see (in the kitchen, in the laundry, etc...), but I'm not sure this always happens...
I converted the amount of 300,000 rupiahs and it makes 24 Euros (sorry, I'm French) which is a huge tip, even for European standards. But I agree to the poster's thought who wrote that the person would know what do with it and was really helpful during their stay.
I do have a question: how much should we give on arrival at the hotel in Bali ? I suppose it depends on the amount of luggage and also on the type of hotel.
One more question: in case we run out of small change in Rupiahs, is it OK to give one US Dollar? I suppose this mean the staff has to go the hotel exchange counter or a bank, but I saw employees doing it regularly in Egypt and this did not seem to create any problem.
