I remember my first time being rather intimidated for the first few haggles. Then something happened - I dressed like a tourist, took off my gold necklace and good hat and put on a shell necklace, sparkly sandals and the obligatory rip off cap. No doubt got "ripped" on all of these but I was so nervous. Decked out my Bali stuff though the vendors then started asking how much I paid and I gave them a much lower figure than I know I had paid and we went from there rather than at their high starting price. With me being the first to throw a figure gave me so much more confidence and I felt I had control, they also knew I already had "the goods" and whether I purchased another shell necklace or whatever was neither here nor there (or thats what I let them think..) Good luck
