a definitive answer from the Australian Customs Dept. I've brought a few back every time I've been and never had any taken from me [except for the African Snail shells, which we'd found in the sand dunes and assumed were sea shells].

Came back last September through Perth Airport. The customs officer was a nice friendly guy, but very thorough and maybe a bit picky. But nothing whatsoever said about our sea shells.
