Had the same problem, purchased a sim card XL which turned out to be useless as couldnt send sms even though they were deducting from my credit, I found out later that none were getting though even though the message had been sent.(So if anyone out there gets any odd messages its most probably mine that I sent)
As a test I couldnt even ring my friends mobile who was with me on holiday. Ended up contacting my daughter via land line to ring Optus and have me converted to international roaming, this worked well for sms to and from australia but still unable to make any calls to local mobiles.
I am pleased to hear that others were having the same problem as I was tearing my hair out thinking I was doing something wrong.
On the other hand not very pleasing when you are trying to keep in contact with people and it becomes VERY FRUSTRATING...............
