Beautiful hotel in a wonderful setting. Some of the buildings go back to the 1920s when it was accomodation for guests of the King of Ubud. In the 1930s an artists' colony, made famous by German artist Walter Spies.
As it is built into the side of a river gorge, there are plenty of steps and slopes, but this just adds to the charm. Lushly vegetated, big trees, bushes, flowers, birds, butterflies and agile little squirrels. A rushing river at the bottom of the gorge.
Just a few interesting minutes walk to the start of Ubud main street. On the way you pass the Antonio Blanco art gallery, a restored Dutch Colonial suspension bridge and the famous Wurni's Warung. http://www.murnis.com/warung/warung.htm
Or if you don't feel like walking, there's a free shuttle bus.
Endless buffet style breakfasts, eaten in a delightful setting, with views over beautiful greenery to the other side of the gorge. You can eat so much that you may be glad of a good walk to help prepare you for a late lunch.
I never stay at what I regard as expensive hotels and I never eat at expensive restaurants, but I don't regard the Tjampuhan as expensive if booked as part of a package deal from Australia. My favourite room is River 3, the closest room to the small pool, but screened from the pool by greenery. And the veranda is well above the level of the path going past, which gives privacy if you are sitting out having a drink.
Two bits of advice. Don't get a room at road level, as you may get some road noise. And ask for a fridge when you get there and they'll generally find you one from somewhere.
A travel agent who posts on this Forum has said that if you stay 4 nights or more, then you get a free upgrade, so maybe you can get an aircon room for the price of a fan-cooled. Worth a try.
Can't you just tell I love the Tjampuhan?
