I think Legian & Kuta are more surf beaches. Im not a huge ocean fan myself but I think its pretty dirty and rough on that side. Sanur however has much cleaner and calmer water, no waves and fairly decent. Don't expect the blue waters of the Whitsundays for example but its just a typical nice beach that you would find anywhere. Im always a bit cautious with the water as a friend suffered an infection (we assume from the ocean) and it took about 9 months to heal. I think if you are susceptible to ear infections, its best to pack some ear plugs.
