of the place you are staying must register you with local authorities & it's for your & their safety.
It has always happened, but some places do it some don't they are always meant too, but I have travelled around staying at a losmen for a night here & there, I believe the person registering you must pay a small fee as they are making money by you staying (helps to line others pockets!) When we stay in the village we give our p'ports to my uncle in law as he is head of the banjar, they are returned later that day, ofcourse I trust him...
But if you don't want to hand yours over request to go with your passports with him to register them or simply say NO, & give him photocopies of them all.
