Sanur is on the east coast (watch the sun rise) and Seminyak is on the west coast (watch the sun set). Check the map (LOL)!
Have never stayed at Seminyak, but will be staying at Legian (which is next door) for the first time ever. We normally stay at Sanur. After 5 nights at Legian, we will go to Sanur.
Sanur is quiet, peaceful, has everything you could possibly want (including the beach market and the art market) and if you pick a hotel centrally located (such as the Griya Santrian or the Besakih Beach Resort (which are next door to each other), you'll be right in the hub of everything, restaurants, shops, the works. It's hugely different to Kuta, but we love it.
