you will get used to it....takes a day or 2.Bali is a shock at first, especially Kuta.You will settle.
Is your hotel clean? Are the staff nice? if so , ask for a better room as you are not satisfied with your aircon.
Don't be afraid at night....should be safe there.
If you are still not happy, then is hard to know what your budget is.
To stay in that area you can go to a bigger place like ramayana or Kuta beach club around the corner ( in the side street of Mataharis) or Bali rani just down the road from Ramayana . Kuta Paradiso opposite ramayana.(bit flasher).
Can go up to Legian and stay at Melasti beach which is a large place or over to Sanur which is quiet.Hotels there recently spoken about here last few days i think Bumi Ayu? was one of them.
decide on where you want to be and budget and then do a post.
