Anyway to answer some of your questions...
For teh painting. Obviously if it is not on canvas and can be rooled up you should be right but if its on canvas I am not 100% sure. I sore people wrapping and wrapping the painting they had bought in butcher paper etc and putting them in with luggage...
Money. I took a card that is overtaking travellers cheques. It is called a cash passport. It is basically a keycard that you load money onto and when over ther you justtake teh money out of the ATM's there. I never had one problem. THey also give you two with two spearate pins in case you lose one! I go tmine from Suncorp Metway bank. But if you enquire with your bank they should be able to help you.
Email was teh best and easiest way for me to stay in contact with everyone. They also have little phone booths within the internet cafes that you cna use IF you need to use the phone. I lost my mobile whilst over there so if I needed ot use a phoneI just used the one int eh cafe... it was the cheapest by HEAPS!!!
I didnt buy much over there at all. To be honest there was nothing really that I wanted... So I amnot sure on this stuff but someone else will be able to help you I am sure!
