Hi. I have a question re bartering etiquette. Prior to our last trip to Bali we'd travelled quite extensively overseas and felt we had the hang of bartering but we hit one snag in Bali ... while I understand that its not Ok to bargain for fun Im wondering but whats the best way to handle the process if when you ask for a price its clear from the opening offer that even if you get it for 1/4 its still way out of your price range?

This happened to us a few times and whereas in other places in the world they accepted your immediate polite 'thanks but no thanks' in Bali they seemed to see it as a challenge and just wouldnt accept that we were no longer interested - they seemed determined to have us make an offer while we were just more determind not to embarass ourselves and them with a riduculously low offer!

After this happened a few times we got put off asking for prices on things that looked expensive but lately reading thru the forum posts I have realised that some of these thing may well have ben within our price range!

So any hints of bartering etiquette in this situation?

Cheers
Sheryl
