I haven't been to HK for a few years now, but used to go every year for business/pleasure.

In the early days, everything in Hong Kong was so cheap, compared to Australia and as a result, HK was a VERY popular destination. In time, prices in HK rose and Australians discovered other parts of Asia. {we blamed the Japanese and Germans for forcing HK prices up as they don't even come close to us in bartering skills}. So nowadays, HK has fallen out of grace.

Anyhow, I still love HK and the prices are not that bad if you barter well. But that's not what HK is about. It's an experience, it's the Manhattan of the Orient, it's electric...

To me, it just one of those things a person must 'experience', up there with the Grand Canyon, the Swiss Alps, the Australian Outback the Pyramids etc etc. It's the feeling of just being there.

I found the people friendly, but I spent a lot of time away from the tourist traps. What is also unique for a 'big city' is that you are reasonably safe anywhere. {use common sense though}.

And of course, if you are not aware, the name Hong Kong means Fragrant Harbour - This is a city that truly bombards all your senses!

I will never, ever, forget my first trip, Christmas eve, coming in to land, flying through a narrow corridor between the hundreds of 120 story buildings, many decorated with lights, like Christmas presents. You could just about reach out and touch them on either side of the plane.

The contrast between HK and Bali will also be an experience. I couldn't think of a better 'pair' to visit.

Hope that helps. I'll get off my soap-box, put on my asbestos suit and prepare for the 'flames'.

Wherever you go, whatever you do, travel safe and have a great holiday!

Paul
