we spent a couple of weeks about 4 years ago on Koh Samui, which is on the Gulf of Thailand, off the east coast. The beaches were absolutely superb, so clean and clear, in the Chaweng Beach area. We really loved it and compared it to Bali as similar but maybe a little more upmarket, maybe a little more expensive, but still very reasonable. The locals were lovely and friendly and sold similar products. Hotels put their umbrellas and lounge chairs out on the sand each morning then bring them in late afternoon. The sand is beautifully raked and cleared of any leaves etc then tables and chairs are set up for dining.
I think its good to have a change and not necessarily ever go back but makes you appreciate Bali again for the reasons you like it.
