luggage

Flying out monday. As a general rule you can take 20kgs luggage but what about hand luggage on plane and does this exclude video cameras or is that included in weight. What are airlines like with excess baggage on way back to Melbourne? Does anyone have a rough idea what excess luggage rates are?
