My wife and I work pretty closely with the women of our village who are pregnant. It seems our having three sons creates its own credibility. Anyway, we supply them with free pre-natal vitamins...expensive here, and calcium supplements. Neither I or my wife have ever heard of glue or petrol sniffing moms to be.
I'm not doubting your story, but for certain it is not a normal practice.
