Agree, Lombok is like Bali 20 years ago, but with less tourists.
Since 2000, tourism has declined which has affected the livelyhood of many locals, but they remain friendly and happy as ever.
Senggigi is the main tourist area of lombok but is very small compared to Bali's tourist areas. There is one main road through Senggigi with a varity of restaurants,shops,supermarket and accommodation.
Intan lombok Village is beachfront, best swimming pool in Lombok,
good bungalow/cottage style accomm. and great staff. Also very good rate this year.
Senggigi is a good base to explore the island:-boat to Gili's, treking, south to Kuta, city markets,weaving and pottery,villages, local football game,a jog with Lombok Hash House Harriers (LHHH)
sailing & fishing of Senggigi beach, the drive north from Senggigi or
"the big dipper off camber".
Senggigi beach is OK for swimming (protected) and surf off reef piont. Boardriders only. Beach volyball at 4pm Intan beachfront.
Sunsets are great also with ice cool bintang on beach.
