I always get a bike when I'm there. They are great for getting around Kuta etc. I even ride up to Ubud and Sanur as well. Cost is between Rp17,000 - 25,000 depends on your negotiation skills and lenght of hire. Even at Rp.25,00 per day you are doing ok eg AUD$4 per day, so don't get too caught up with the price. Whatever figure you settle on, tell them that this includes insurance or you will go elsewhere. They will always say yes after a little complaining. Make sure that you get your intenational drivers licence here first. I always carry my licence, receipt for hire and insurance receipt under the seat in the little compartment. If pulled over by the Police, show them the lot. Don't automatically start flashing cash. Most times in Kuta they will send you on your way. You don't get pulled over very often in Kuta its mainly out on the open road between villages.
My only concern would be that you have ridden a bike elsewhere before. Although many do it, Kuta is not the place to take your first ride.
I would have caught up with you for a drink, however, the 28th is the day I get home.
