Agree with Cazwa about the JW Marriott and his/her other shopping tips... I live in KL... glad you're coming to our great city.. tonnes of shopping to be done here! All the Singaporeans love it here these days...and wouldn't you know it?! Its that time of the year again - Mega Sale Shopping Carnival ! We have this 3 times a year... this time you'll find the best prices till end of August.
Other suggestion I have for hotels are:
Mandarin Oriental, KLCC (this is right next to the Petronas Twin Towers and its mall called "Suria KLCC" (was this the modern one you were referring to, Cazwa?)
Berjaya Times Square hotel - this is one of the newest in town. Its also part of a HUGE mall (with a amusement park inside it)... very close to the shopping places / hotels Cazwa mentioned.
As for shopping... the best shopping can perhaps be done in suburbia... Tell your taxi driver to take you to "One Utama" or "Mega Mall" - both are must-do's!
And yes, Chinatown is fantastic... tell your taxi driver to take you to "Petaling Street"... you can shop along here pretty much all afternoon and night... they offer better quality fakes in KL in comparison to Bali...
Also, if you're interested in doing some of those "Face To Face" engraving on items (keychains, pendants etc)... its MUCH cheaper in KL than Bali...
