Just take some in NZ notes and load up your card to use in ATMS.
Don't bother exchanging to US$ first - all that will achieve is an extra commission charge eating up your spending money. I wouldn't go to the hassle of going to banks to withdraw cash from your card. There's ATMs everywhere and you'd have to be very unlucky to lose your card, just like at home. I used my Visa card in the ATMs on my last trip, withdrawing every day or two and had no trouble at all.
