Sam - agree in most tot he posts... After your first few trips to Bali you work out who is legit and who isn't.
BUT
You have to be firm and hard... Many a tourists' vacation has been ruined because they don't have the balls to be firm and walk on past - or push a pesky trader who is trying to drag them down an alley away.
My advice to any newcomer - BE FIRM.
Use your judgement on bargining - if you are getting genuine service and feel comfortable - take Sam's advice... But don't get mislead or put into a situation you feel insecure...
Don't be afraid to say a stern TIDAK or F'OFF
