Don't even begin to worry .. it is such a touristy spot that you'll feel very safe.
My partner & I were there two weeks ago and had a great time and met some really nice people. There was no sign of violence and we didn't get ripped off by anyone. We tried to speak what little Indonesian we learnt and we're repaid by much friendliness by the Balinese. Watch the money changers, there are a few "magic" ones (as the Balinese call them)around - use a Bank or one of the many ATM's around. Great shopping and art abound, not to mention fantastic food and a beautiful landscape. Oh, and I had a fantastic facial at our hotel, my skin hasn't felt or been so good for ages. We stayed at the Bali Rani hotel in Tuban and found it small, nice and friendly - far warmer than the huge and imposing "Hard Rock Hotel" and "Kartika Plaza" (although you would love those places if you like a bit of luxury).
Have fun!
