I have just been to Bali and in addition, I would think some people may enjoy hearing an authentic (and acclaimed) Balinese gamelon rather than spending the weekend at home writing small minded coments on their computer.
As for culture, the San Francisco bay area does have many museums, theater, symphony, opera, galleries, and film houses. We even have bookstores, 4 universities, libraries, and many educated people if you can imagine that. And, more restaurants per capita than any other city (not including McDonalds).
As a vegan, I did not partake in the Americanization of Bali, through hamburgers and chips--ha! as you say), however I did notice that these places seem very popular in as popular in Bali as they are in places like Moscow, Hong Kong and Paris. Strange.
