great choice! for that price, with breakfast, you can't go wrong. i think it was one thing in my life that i will always remember.(and i have been to over 40 countries)
as far as renting a car, since we drive on the right hand side of the road, i don't know if i would want to. the roads are narrow and the cabs are cheap. there are a couple of restaurants at the foot of the road leading to the hotel. i didn't try them, but one called kokul cafe (i think) got a good rating and it's not far. since you are eating breakfast at the hotel, just go out for dinner. with that buffet that they serve, you will be full til late afternoon.
email wayan nama, and set up your touring with him in advance. that way, you can pace your trip. we gave him $40 us for a tour from 8am -8pm and he only asked for $30. it was money well spent, because he can take you to restaurants that are good, but cheap.
i personally think a lot of these people who get ill eat at cheap restaurants that arent' clean.
we didn't get sick at all. that's amazing for 2 weeks with 2 kids, a senior and 2 adults.
poppies is a good restaurant in kuta. the setting is very cool.
also in ubud, wayan took us to a restaurant called indus.
it is owned by the same people who own another really popular restaurant and the view is superb. don't eat the bali paella, though. the squid were tough as shoe leather.
unless you are really a seafood lover, don't order food over there that says "seafood" it usually means something weird....
not shrimp, lobster or crab.
also, i think our best meal was in denpasar at a restaurant that wayan took us to. it was chinese. he isn't getting a kickback or anything, because no one knew him there. it was so crowded and cost us like $25us for all six of us to have a HUGE dinner. the bali fish specialty is excellent and so is the eggplant.
