From my experience as a cultural hostess, I would tell you that Ubud is the best "strategic" place to stay for preparing daily excursions inland.
Visiting the backstreets of Bali (which is, in my opinion, like a huge shopwindow)requires knowledge. It is easy to venture in the village streets, but more difficult to know and understand what you see, feel and experience.
Most of my guests I already accompanied plan to enjoy the beach in the South for a few days, then always move up to Ubud, much more "balinised".
