The ferry is long and tedious. I've taken it twice, once it took 5 hrs, once 7. It wastes an entire day. You also have to take a bus to Bangasal harbour and if you don't get there before 5pm you have to stay in Mataram or Sengigi or pay off a boat driver. If at all possible, take the speedier Mabua Express (about 2.5 hrs) or fly. It's worth it. As for diving, I don't but have friends who do. Gili has clear water and nice fish. Some sharks, sea turtles and mantas if your lucky. Unfortunately a lot of corral has been damaged by dynamite fishing. Enjoy it!
