Eric,

I agree with TPL, we have been to Bali 10 times and have hired both motor bikes (in our younger, more adventurous days)and cars, and have found both to be trouble free and great fun. As TPL stated you are not bound by timetables and others ideas of where you should go or for how long. We have travelled most of the highways and byways of Bali and found ourselves in the most beautiful, unexplored places by accident. As TPL says Denpasar can be a bit hair-raising, but travel slowly and courteously and you'll have no problems. The rules seem to be go when you can, stop when you can't and give way to everybody, and they will give way to you. Just take your time and enjoy the scenery, there is no road rage in Bali, and not as many accidents as some people imply, we have only seen a couple of minor bingles in our many hours of driving on Bali roads. Make sure you take your vehicle for a test run and test everything (A/C, radio/cassette,spare tyre and jack etc.) before hiring, as with everything else in Bali they will try and fob you off with less if they can. Make sure insurance is included in the price, just in case, and you will need an International Driver's Licence available from your local Auto Club.

Happy Trails

Anita
