The Gilis are the best place by far, to snorkel in Lombok. You can wade in (not too far) from the beach and see some great coral, parrot fish, angel fish and if you're lucky, a sea turtle. There are also 1-day snorkelling trips available that leave from Gili Trawangan (and the other islands too I'm sure). For about 20,000Rp (in Oct. '98) you get a mask and a trip around the three islands. The only problem is that in places the coral has been damaged by dynamite fishing and an influx of boats in general. It's still beautiful and one of my favourite things to do!
