The problem with Lombok, and much of Bali for that matter is that the island water does not get very deep until you go WAY out. You can be 100 yards out and the water is only 2 feet deep and the bottom is covered with hard coral so it is diffcult to walk.
The best way to snorkel is to take a day boat out to one of the outer reefs or out to the Gili Islands which are very beautiful for diving/snorkling.
