You are used to driving and drive slowely (you do so automatically on Bali) and "defensively". It's only around DPS 's bad.
My family and I was driving for 5 weeks without any problems at all - actually we found that the Balinese was not that bad drivers and quite "friendly" in the trafic.
But You need to have routine and a quiet temper. The biggest car always have the right to the road. Expect people to drive out in front of you (hence drive slowly).
We liked the "freedom" not to be dependent on a driver.
We paid 60.000 Rp. a day all inclusive for a toyota Kijang 92.
