I've been renting cars in Bali for many years. Some time ago, it was pointed out to me that the car you actually rent should have an "RC" number-plate on it...otherwise, you may get stopped "for no reason" to check this out. This is usually not a problem (as long as you have the registration papers in the car).

Having said that, I just returned from a couple of months in Bali and my latest experience involved getting stopped in Eastern Bali for a registration check (it was the end of the month, when some police feel they have to supplement their income to make ends meet). The police pointed out to me that my rental car didn't have an "RC" plate on it. I feigned indifference and surprise at the same time. After all, I'd rented this car from a Balinese and he hadn't warned me that there could be a potential problem. I promised to tell the owner of the car that he might be breaching the law. I also tried to point out (as nicely as possible) that there are no signs at the airport warning people about this. On the other hand, over the last 25 years or so that I've been going to Bali and renting cars (with no "RC" plates), this was only the second time that some policeman has brought it to my attention.

It's usually no problem whatsoever. I've driven past thousands of police all over Bali with my non-RC-plated car with no problems. Every now and then, however, you might come across somebody who wants to try and get some of your money for themselves. Just know that you might be "breaking the law" by hiring a car without the correct plate. If you get asked, just be nice and you'll most likely be on your way again in a few minutes.
