As the others have said, you really need more than a week. I go for 10 days minimum, and that's flying from Aus. only 5 hours away. Having said that, personaly I wouldn't bother with Hawaii I found it even more commercialised than Bali. If you want a dose of a different culture it is much stronger in Bali out of the tourist areas than has been allowed in Hawaii. You can always rely on Florida for a different culture blast as well!!!! (I really loved it there with the kids)
Anyway, if you are solo Bali is the perfect place. I went there for two weeks on my own and had no problems at all. I spent most of the time in Ubud where I felt much safer than Kuta, and you can walk everywhere for restaurants, shops etc. I wouldn't bother going half the way around the world to stay in Nusa Dua, you can stay in a tourist enclave in US. I had no trouble meeting up with people to go out with, have dinner and share transport with. When people are on holiday they are usually much more open for new experiences and friendships. I chose Bali for my solo trip because I could indulge in all the things my husband and kids find so boring - shopping, walking, bike riding, eating and most of all lazing around reading books. Please try to get more time you won't regret it.
