Wood carvings can really be bought anywhere in Bali, it just depends on what you are looking for. Everywhere sells all the brightly coloured tourist wood ornaments which are great, but if you are after "quality". a trip to Mas is the way to go. It is the place to go, but unfortunately you pay top US$ for it and I did not think that it was all that much better. Ubud has some great wood carving places that are quite cheap.
Bringing it back is no problem. We had 2 large bags full of wood carvings and all you have to do is declare it at customs, they inspect it for you and then let you through. They did not even want to look at anything else or our suitcases. Took about 5 minutes all up and we found that most people on our flight were decalring things they had bought too.
Good luck
