U.S./Bali E-mail

What's the best way to receive AND send e-mail between the States and Bali? Not going to Densapar - more like Ubud. Get a hotmail account and use internet cafes? Use AOL? Is there any way to do an instant messaging/chat with the States to conduct a real-time 'conversation?'
