Have you any idea just how bad the roads are or how bad the drivers are on Bali? And that is before you get dogs, chickens, children, motorbikes (thousands) and people (more thousands) wandering the road.
We have just spent 3 weeks on Bali and Java and wouldn't recomend driving yourself. Taxis and bemos are plentiful and very cheap. We hired a car (airconditioned) with driver for the whole day for 150,000 rupiah ($30 Australian dollars) to take us on a long trip from around 9.00am to about 6.00pm. We then did the same the next two days and saw most of Bali. It really isn't worth the hassle or risk to drive yourself!
