1. Credit card is a good fallback and I found the rate I got reasonable.
2. Australian dollars (any notes - money is money - easier to take 100s and 50s) are good to get local currency from the moneychanges.
3. US dollars are useful as some hotels only take cash and will only take US dollars or rupiah (at an exchange you will not be able to get in the street).
4. Some hotels will take credit cards and/or travellers cheques with no penalty - if its $50 US for a night they will accept $50 US cah or travellers cheque. If you can ring up your hotel before you leave and see what they take. If you cannot do that and you are going to pay for accomodation take US dollars.
