yet another money change question

Sorry for boring topic, but I've been monitoring recent postings and archive and still need some clarification on money-changing.
I'm intending to take Aussie dollars. What notes are best , $100, $50, $20, $10's, or a mix, or it doesn't really matter? Do they have to be pristine, mint, crisp plastic notes? Can you pay for expensive items like tours/cruises organised through hotels etc. directly with Aussie $$(or $US cash)? What I gather from the postings is that Travellers Cheques are a waste of time apart from the security benefits (which sound to be unnecessary if cautious and vigilant), and credit cards have a certain "unknown" cost factor with the various "commission/conversion" charges by the sequence of parties involved in the transaction. ATM's seem to have the same drawback to a lesser degree, although the charges are relatively high given the limit on transaction amount (about 600KRp or AUD100 max I believe)?
As you can see I've almost answered myself, I just need some supportive nods or nays?
Thanks, Graul
