I went to Lombok 3 years ago and absolutely loved it!!! Make sure you go to one of the islands off of Lombok, Gili Air, Gili Mino and Gili Trawangan. The scuba diving and snorkling are great.
I am going down for 2 months at the end of October. Can't wait!!
I would recommend 'Pondok Senggigi' as a great spot to stay. They have reasonably priced rooms. The staff is super. They have live bands every weekend and it's also a place where the locals meet
up and hang out too. 'Pondok' actually means 'meeting place'. The telephone number is 0370- 93275 - 93273 or fax: 0370- 93276.
For diving I would recommend speaking with Andy Chan who runs Albatross Diving {tel: 0370-93399 fax: 0370-93388} just up the road from Pondok. He can arrange for
a trip out to Gili Trawangan and will help with accommondations there too if you want to stay over night. The accommodations are simple.
I still remember the stars at night -- incredible how many!!!
You can rent a motorcycle/scooter and bomb around the island. We made some wonderful Lombokian {?} friends and they showed us waterfall spots,
the Kuta Beach area and beautiful private rice fields. The people on Lombok are so friendly.
You can get there by boat or air {Meripati airlines} for very inexpensive.
