I've been to CD about 5 times in 8 years. I've seen little change; but can't speak from before that. Good quiet place.
I personally prefer the water garden at Ujung - where the king actually lived.
Amed is a small village but about 10 such now have the collected name, so "Amed" stretches about 10 km down the eastern coast. Don't expect a built up area like Kuta etc (but guess you don't want that anyway). Get a driver to give you a tour and ask his recs for lunch (he's probably on a kickback but if you define yr requirements should be OK).
Another destination from CD is Besakhi (sp?, the main temple in Bali on the mountain / volcano north of CD. I didn't rate it....too many attempted rip offs.
Hope you enjoy your trip. We are back in Sanur April so looking forward to that.
BTW CD not a great place for shopping but a good clothes store about 4 shops east of the lagoon called "Maya" or similar. Set back from warungs. Fixed price. Also ask re driver there(owner's brother)...was very reasonable pprice from memory.
