mate but in Godzone ( where there is no rabies - although I know several people who exibit the symptoms ) all rabies vaceine is held by the Health Dept in Wellington ( as it has a shelf life )and sent to district hospitals when necessary, who administer it. It's not available to GP's and would never be available for anyone bitten in New Zealand, only those returning from overseas.
I imagine the same thing applies in OZ and that the idiot doctor to whom you refer would have been put right as soon as he tried to order it.
The jury appears to be out with squirrels in that whether they can be carriers or not seems to be "unproven" rather that "disproven" as rabies can theoretically be transmitted to ( and by) all mammals.
Our dog Jack is currently having introvenous treatment for a nasty growth he has on his "old fella" with strong and dangerous stuff brought in from NZ ( The only stuff that will cure him and not available in Bali.) Jack felt he needed a better qualified medical advisor than his usual GP so the good Wahine sought out a guy in the Sesetan Government agricultural facility with a PhD from Australia, to treat him.
And your point is?
He is also working to modify the rabies vaceine as the Bali strain is different from those found elsewhere.
So even if the risk is from "zero to bugger all" wouldn't it be prudent to treat these children rather than - perhaps - gamble with thier lives.
My chances of contracting tetanus are "buggar all" but I get a booster even before it's due!
Jack had his first treatment with the NZD700.00 medicine yesterday which took 3 hours. Hopefully the guy will be cured after 3 more.
Jack has requested no flowers please - all donations to BAWA.
