I came through Bali's Ngurah Rai airport yesterday on my way to Perth and experienced the new smokers bar/area upstairs in departures - and, well, like it!
Before Gate 7 on the other side of the travelator/moving walkway up a set of stairs is the new (to me) smoking area in the form of Hard Rock Cafe Bar.
The mostly open air bar has a lengthy glass pane to look out directly over aircraft, lots of open sky area with benches for smokers, and an undercover bar which serves overpriced drinks - a small Bintang almost $10. (I bought a Bintang from a shop below for $5 and carried it up because, um, well, because.) Other people were drinking coffees and soft drinks bought from shops in departures below as well so bringing outside drinks into the new area doesn't appear to be an issue...yet.
I like the new area as it has a little bit of character unlike the old room/space which is still there but closed. The other attraction is the close proximity to the planes from the viewing pane. At the time there were three craft directly in front and below and you felt close to tarmac operations and the aircraft themselves which I personally like.
I think the new smokers area is a vast improvement on the old room.
