Point to point airlines make some profits but more serious is the fact that many low cost airlines only fuel up with what is needed to the average weight of each flight including all checked luggage.

The average weight is including passenger numbers plus 7kg per pax plus laptop/handbag/duty free.

Those that take well over their 7kg carry on to save a few $ on checked luggage are irresponsible and could cause a flight to be under fuelled in the case of diversions or go around,s,and this is the real reason they re check carry on in the departure lounge with some flights and not others, extra fuel. A heavy flight uses more fuel.

A Perth Airport re fueler told me this.
