If you get onto agoda.com and search for Kuta Bali you'll find some cheaper options if you want to book your first night - or even beyond. Arrange the search from prices low to high and the first page as a few hostels among the cheaper hotels and home stays.
The taxi booth at the airport is (or should be) fixed price based on where you are headed.
